From Singapore with love…

2010
03.30

Going to have to be a very quick blog post as you get logged off the internet every 15mins…

We’re back where we started now- in Singapore airport-Polly is doing lots of research on accomidation in Australia to try and calm her nerves of rocketing prices… We only get 1.6 dollars to the pound and very cheap dorm beds are 15 dollars, so its going to be a bit of shock in costs :s and we don’t have an Aus guide book as the cheap one was over 40 singapore dollars (our accomidation was 7 dollars each to put that into perspective!)

Have had a fun time in Singapore, did all the site seeing thingeys and went to the ZOO! It was really fun :) Singapore does have a thing with thunderstorms every afternoon so we have been getting quite wet! Managed to get to the airport dryish :) Found out today that our flight to Aus isn’t quantas its Jetstar :( the cheap quantas so we might not have our personal entertainment systems :(  O well sure it will be fine!!

We’ve just been chatting some people who have just done Aus and they said that in Cairns airport there is a big board with lots of hostels that will pick you up for free if you ring them! Also they all have kitchens to cook food (Pasta) to save the pennies! Was nice to chat to them as Polly is a lot more relaxed now and not fretting that witing 2 weeks she’ll have gone through her budeget for all of Oceaia!!

I’ve accepted my Uni now, going to Royal Holloway near London next October, not where I would have imagined myself going as its not in the city, but the research I have done (not that much) makes me think I’m going to enjoy and I know someone there doing a similar course and he’s really enjoying it.. The course I am doing for those who don’t know, is human geography. It’s a speciallised course rather than just a BA in Geography which I think will suit me well!

Only a few minutes left till I have to relog in so I will publish this now and we’ll do a more in depth blog in AUSTRALIA!!! Xxxx

Toby’s idea of a hangman word: plexi-glass?!?!?

2010
03.27

Yes, that was my winning hangman word! Anyway – to the blog!

Mopeding, Day Two… We didn’t actually moped in the morning, instead we went and chilled at our local beach, we wanted to go and see what the guidebook described as ‘one of your top 10 lifetime sunsets’ so didn’t want to be driving all day. After getting a really good lunch (baguette and chips – I won a free ice-cream off Polly as she reckoned that we wouldn’t get chips..) we did set off to drive up a mounatain that was meant to have really good views; even though I’d signed a thingy saying I wouldn’t drive up any mountains! What rebels we are… The drive up was fun and windey, at the top was a posh hotel basically, so we parked up in the carpark to admire the view.. Noticed that there were some steps and a little sign saying that you can climb the 5000 steps if you wish to get up here – mopeding was far more fun!

After the mountain we headed out towards the main town place to look at it, basically cause I wanted to look at the huge eagle statue that I saw from the boat.. It was a cool statue, but town driving was stressfull. Once we were out of the town and onto the road up to sunset beach I let Polly drive :S Yes, on a real road… As you can tell by the fact I’m writing this, we did survive, but Polly took us up to 80kmh (speeding tut tut) and around a roundabout! We arrived at the beach a couple of hours before sunset so bought some tasty watermelon and found a shady spot to lie in and read as we were both a bit burnt. We then jumped into the sea giving us just enough time to watch the amazing sunset…

So the sun starts setting, the colours are getting all lovely… then the sun goes behind some clouds. End of sunset! Was still nice, but don’t think it will be in our top 10 we have had better ones on our travels! Drove back partially in the dark, (I resumed the driving you’ll be glad to know) and stopped off at the restraunt for some more amazing food :) then to the supermarket for some 25p a can beer!

The next day was our flight, which meant that we could lie in rather than having to get on the bus :) The flight was very smooth and we managed to get onto a bus into Kuala Lumpur city centre just as it was about to leave, so very effiecient travel :) Today is our second full day in Kl. When we arrived on the bus it was drizziling a bit, but also some thunder and lightning.. checked into a guidebook hotel pretty quickly as we were expecting a downpour.. and we were right. Tropical thunderstorms have happened both evenings! There quite exciting tbh and you dry off very quickly. We did use our raincoats on the first afternoon while exploring the China town main road and also succumed to a Maccy Ds when we arrived (first since we got here) as it was convienant.

We ate tea at a random street stall though so that does rendeem us slightly! Yesterday we were going to get up early to get Patronas tower tickets, but lied in instead.. We went and looked at the outside of the towers though and we were up early today to stand in the insane queue (playing hangman, I won Polly tried to cheat!) so we’re going up in a couple of hours (to only the 40th ou of probs 150 floors) but still you’ve got to do it! Went round lots of huge shopping centres in the golden triangle of KL and also went to the cinema! Saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D as a bit of a rest for our legs as we have been doing loads of walking! The first night we walked out into little India and didn’t really find anything there tbf, but was cool to see it and someone tried to sell me a carpet!

Have had some good haggling experiences, with one merchant calling me crazy for not paying his rediculus price of 45R (nearly a tenner!), luckily I found the same thing round the corner for 15R so was worth being called insane! They have big food courts here in the basements of the shopping centres, with basically all styles of food around the edge in stallely thingeys and eating areas in the middle, they are dead cheap and like local food for tourists so it is where we have been eating mainly. Had insanely spicy rice dishes last night – I had to finish Polly’s and it did leave a burn in my mouth! Got amazing strawberry floats though, which cooled my mouth off :)

Today we were up early as I said and have managed to get some tickets to go to the bridge thingy :) we got to the underground to the otherside of town and then walked out to the planaterium. We wandered round and I payed to go in astronaunt training thingy, basically a cage that you get spun round in! Was fun and got quite a crowd of chinese tourists who applauded when it finished! We then watched a movie film theatre showing (thats what they call them here) on the big domey overhead screens looking around our universe (with Tom Hanks doing the voiceover, Polly was happy at this fact) then walked back via a market to here, the internet place near our hotel. Pollys legs have died from all the walking and she is sitting next to me in a semi dazed state… Got to walk back out to the towers (altough Pol has found a station nearby so I think is hinting at getting a train) Apparently we’re not allowed to do anying that involves walking after the towers so might even head back to the cinema to see the Matt Damon film as it is dead cheap to get in and drinks here cost a fortune!!

Booked our bus to Singapore for tomorrow getting in at about 2ish. Trying to reserve beds in a dorm, but not sure if we’ll here back from them in time! Not sure what we’re going to do in Singapore, trying to have some sort of plan to make the most of our time, might have something to do with a zoo at some point if Polly gets here way! Bye for now, & here’s Polly…

not much to add really except to apologise for tobys atrocious spelling :P this is what happens when im too tired to edit him as we go along, hehe :)

And, yes, i think a zoo is very much in order!

p.s. photos will be done next time, we have quite a backlog now!

We had thought of a really really good title for this blog post… but then we forgot it :(

03.23

Sorry sorry sorry sarah, but the blog website loads SERIOUSLY slowly here and to be honest, we cba- but here it is a day late.

SO, the last time we wrote was from bangkok which feels about a million years ago but actually really isn’t… The night bus to Krabi which we were getting ready for when we last blogged was actually a success compared with some of them, considering the warning we had read in the guidebook about budget buses from the road we booked off. Oh well. Another early arrival, this time at 8 summit am to basicallly a jetty thing in the middle of nowhere. Turns our krabi isnt really that exciting apparently so we made a crazy rash decision (well not really) and booked ourselves on a minibus to the nearest beach- Ao Nang. And managed to pay half of what other people had paid for the transfer just two hours before when the bus stopped at 5 and people tried to hassle us to buy onward tickets result. By 10am after lots of guesthouse enquiring and rejecting after hearing the price, we ended up with our very own bamboo bungalow thing – only 8 quid between us (our bartering is obvs getting better). Lovely jubbly times, we had to sacrifice air con but we gained a porch- essential for uno playing times, and being eaten alive by mosquitoes we later discovered- yay!

The beach turned out to be very nice which was a strike of luck as this place wasn’t even in the guidebook! (yeh man, thats how good we are getting at travelling)- and, shocked by the prices of southern thailand restaurants we went for takeaway sandwiches and fruit shakes (omg- deffo make the top 5, if not top 3 … yum yum yum.) WE bought a beach blanket to prepare ourselves for our long hard weeks of beaching ahead and chilled for a rather long time and only got a little bit burned. Then it was more booking times, sea kayaking trip the next morning (8 am pick up) and bus and ferry to langkawi (bartered price) for the day after (6am start- ew). That evening we were poor again so had to resort to sharing a pizza at a restaurant then some changs (beer) and lots of uno on the bungalow porch. And a bar of dairy milk which was my first proper chocolate bar in a month-mmmmm present from toby :)

SO sea-kayaking was pretty awesome, we had been worried that the prices would be high but wanted to do it anyway and found a half day trip for 8 quid. Basically it wasnt really sea, more like a bit of sea then right through this cove with mangrove swampy stuff and lots of impressive rocks and cliffs… and monkeys which chased you and tried to steal anything on you and could swim! who knew?!?! We liked the monkeys they were deffo a highlight and the guide was funny and another fruit party was included- good times. Didnt want to faff with the camera in the water so couldnt get any photos and couldnt afford the one they offered which was taken just as we set off :(

In the afternoon we made our own day trip by long tail boat to a weird non island thing which is only reachable by boat called Railay beach. Resort land with loadssssss of posh hotels covered, and everything so so xpensive. Pot noodles from the minimart saved us a hefty bill for lunch thankfully. We explored for quite a bit and did find a bit of a backpacker section at the back where the beaches were not so nice and therefore cheaper, found some more monkeys (yay) and some funky rocks and caves. We ended up at Pranang beach which was probably the nicest beach ive ever been to (toby concurs —  one of best…get him!) The water was all bluey green and clear and all lagoon like. It felt like being in a wave pool, only better because it was real! ANd there was a big scary rock to jump off :) i dont thinnk ive ever screamed so loud- pics of this place will be coming later when we find some not so rubbish internet… SO yeah, it was a very hard afternoon before heading back, and sneakily getting two teas from a cheapy takeaway-y place. Toby would like to say he only had one… but it was a massive pizza … and he did slip in some jumbo sized pot noodles about an hour later so i say that counts as two :)

5:30am- yes that is the time i like our alarm to go off- not. But it did unfortunately and thn we had to sit at the reception of th guesthouse for ages waiting for the minibus which came late ish. Wont bore you with details but 5 hours mini bus … 1 hour wait… 1 hour ferry… 1 hour time difference, and bam we were in malaysia, and toby has a complete page of 6 stamps in his passport :) im on 5 but going for it… he’s now wishing for a double page spread…Taxi to pantai cenang which is the beach for travellers on langkawi island, guesthouse hopping again, ended up at the first one we tried…..grrrrr. Its nice though, pink walls (laura you would love) and hammocks outside. Chilled out in the afternoon checked out the beach (v nice) and eventually found somewher cheap enough for us to eat which was sooo yummy, i think we might have to sneak back there tonight…

Oh yeah, and we also sneakily booked some flights to our next destination (kuala lumpur), which turned out to be about  a tenner more than an 8 hour long bus, which inevitably means 10 hours plus, which would have been alllllll day! instead we get to check out at a reasonable time, airport round the corner, 1 hour flight, short transfer to city centre. done. WE also arranged to rent a moped  for two days (today and tomorrow ) last night which worked out at a fiver each for the two days :) hehe… they did look at toby strangely when he was inquiring…. do you have a license?? yes yes… and you know how to drive full automatic… yes yes :) we just apparently dont know how to open the luggage compartment, and had to go back to the shop to get them to show us. I also like how they gave us yellow helmets with ladybirds and the label kids on them- they are very trendy! SO today, we made our own day trip. I was official map reader and i was very good ;) and toby was cheif driver… obvs would you actually dare let me loose??? ok well, apparently he would because i zipped up and down the empty roads by the hotel like a pro….:)… except for one little turning faux pas… but sssshhhhhh.

SO today, we headed off, first stop, the langkawi cable car ‘Langkawi’s Newest and most exciting attraction’ Described by the guidebook as unmissable – even to travellers on tight budget. Well it sure looked impressive… we wouldn’t be able to tell you if it actually is as its closed for maintainance today….and tomorrow, but o well it was proper expensive and we’re going to drive up a massive hill thing that apparently has Langkawi’s second best views :) so yeah, that was awesome. Next stop, the seven wells waterfall with natural slides in between the wells. Yeah man! that was good too, i mean, maybe if it had had some water running down it it may have been better, but who am i to judge. We are making this sound like a pretty rubbish morning, but actually moped-ing about was very fun and at the waterfall we did a 2 hour trek thing through the jungle/rainforest whatever it is, without a guide.. hardcore.

We thn spend about 40 mins driving down a road to reach a dead end, and another hour getting to the next stop, desperate for our planned picnic lunch. But seriously where is food when you need it?? thankfully- my bum was very numb) we found a supermarket thing and stocked up on strawberry milk, bickies and crisps then some fruit and made crisp sandwiches and sat by the beach which was completely empty before having a dip to cool down. Then we drove back and i learnt how to drive a moped then a bar on the beach with our books and tax-free beer. awesome times.

And i think that about brings you up to date. Day 2 of the moped adventure will be coming shortly, as will photos when we find somewhere that’ll do them, probably kuala lumpur.

… Yesterday was indeed a very sad day. I was stood in the queue to get back into thailand and then someone stood on the back of my flippy flop. Which would have been fine, except for the whole base split into two and the strap fell off :’( they had been so comfy and so trusty :( . SO, i walked into thailand with no shoes on before a quick fix with a hair bobble extended their life by a few hours. RIP flippy floppies.

Got a minivan to a lunch stop where we stayed for wayyyyy too long (an hour or so) everyone itching to get to bangkok. We had been told various arrival times by travel agents from 3:30 to 5, but when we left the restaurant at 2 with a guesstimated journey time of 4 hours we werent hopeful for the earlier time… We got on another minivan ( which was hot and sweaty but fine because it was only another 5 minute transfer…right??? ) wrong, it took us all the way to bangkok which did indeed take another 5 hours including two more overly long stops. But we got there… and they dropped us off pretty close to the tourist road thing (khao san road) and we waded through the prostesters (apparently there is some big thing going on, if only we watched the news…. ) and after walked up and down the road a few times found ourselves a place to stay, imaginatively titled – budget guesthouse.

This road is a pretty weird place, basically a tourist farm road with loads of market stalls bars, cafes but with not very much at all on the surrounding roads. We ummed and ahhed over whether to stay one night or two, but went for one, basicaly because it hopefully means we will be able to have an extra day on a beachy island or at least make us not as rushed in our last 10 days in asia. So we have booked our tickets out of here tonight to a place called KRABI, another overnighter. Get in!

And today has been pretty lazy after chilling with a few changs last night woke up late held a postcard lottery (youll have to wait and see….) and lunch then here. Think thats about it peeps! and yay for two blog entries in one day :)

got some photos up but, slow again, im sure we’ll catch up at sometime soon

Went to Angkor Wat- SO overwhelmed…I cried.

2010
03.19

HA! not really! I suppose you could say that temples are not really are favourite thing in the world. But we overheard this comment from a random man and had to proper stifle our laughter. Good times. Left sihanoukville, another overnighter – goody- bad leg room times though, but did manage to get some sleep. Not too too happy when i woke up at about 5:30am and 10 minutes later we pulled into a station thing (still dark)… and i woke toby up saying, i have a bad feeling that this might be it… and it was :S Why can’t buses get to places at normal times??? and why is everyone awake and alert except us??

To be fair, it could have been a lot more traumatic, we bought a tuk tuk ticket to the centre for a dollar each and the dude helped us find a nice cheap guesthouse. He later became our chauffeur (damn straight) the day after to take us round the temples, and turned out to be the laziest guy alive. Everytime we met up with him he had managed to sneak off to a hammock or lay out in the back of the tuk-tuk lard arse. He was nice though, and i think he kind of understood our temple mindframes…. slows down.. do you need to see this one? us- probably not.. him ok…. only one more guys :)

We started with very good intentions—- meeting him at 5:30am (yes that is 5:30AM) at the hotel so we could beat the crowds (ha!) and watch the sunrise at angkor wat. But still it was early and as we were walking towards the main bit, we noticed there was a dirt track (to the right) chair stack (to left) which just left… errr… Angkor crap straight ahead… but only coz it rhymed… honest! 6 hours later phew, we were finito-ed. And that was eek-ing it out a bit just to justify the $20 price tag (!) They were all very lovely and temply and the one with the faces was quite cool, but im sure when we’re old we’ll appreciate them more. As it was, a bit of total wipeout on the t.v and some uno with a cocktail sounded far more appealing.

The food in siam reap was pretty good (as were the foot massages), and cheap in comparison to some places…. we tried proper cambodian food which was served in palm leaves (posh times) and the next day tried a cambodian bbq at a street vendor stall thing . $3 between us, and they put this weird cooker thing on the table, mix noodles, stock, and veg round the outside, and you cook the meat yourself on the top bit, with rice as well. Tres bon value and more fruit shakes of course. It was st. patricks day and the bars were all quite full and we almost felt required to go out, but after a couple of beers and some free popcorn :) we decided sleep was a better option as we has another bus in the morning – whooooooop.

7:30am bus to bangkok times. We had spent agesssss looking around for a bus ticket, varying in price from $7 to $16 (but that one left at 6am-  booo) and checking air-con? (yes yes) toilet (yes, after the border) one bus? (no change at the border. WE went for the $7. Lovely. The bus pulled into the travel agent place and you could almost here the groans from all the travellers thinking, please drive by, please drive by. It didn’t drive by. And there was nothing really wrong with it, it was just old. and full. And, its a very good job i looked out the window just before we left to check the bags were on and noticed Tobys still sat there. They’ll put it on – he assured me. So we left it a few minutes. Nah, they didnt so we had to go and rescue it. It basically looked like the hold had got full, so… they just left the others there. His bag ended up in the aisle, along with a few other peoples bags that had been left behind, as well as random plastic chairs wedged down the aisle to accomodate more people, and the 4 (yes 4) drivers ?!?

Stopped after an hour for a toilet break (really necessary?) then continued and just before the border a few more passengers appeared who had to stand, but they were told that they could sit on their bags for more comfort. oh goody, thankfully we had seats. 10 minutes from the border we stopped for a “ticket check” which is code for, the drivers were hungry. which involves standing around for a while, having our tickets taken away and being given a red sticker (plain) which was apparently our ticket to Bangkok. Alrighty then. back on the bus, back off the bus. More border times :) ….

Into Cambodia… & the beach BBQs :)

Short of time for this post, so will be a quick one I’m afraid! We have a bus picking us up at 7 and need to eat beforehand!

I haven’t actually read our last blog post yet! So hoping this one kinde follows on. We’re in Cambodia atm having had to travel all day to get here from HCMC as the border is only open 7-5 so you can’t do a night bus :( Was a l0ng journey.. I had my book to read, but Polly bought a mouldy one that fell apart when she opened it so she had nothing!

So anyway HCMC (Saigon) arrived 6am after the night bus, shattered due to little sleep (kids crying on buses is v. annoying) but determined not to pay $18 that most hotels were charging. So at 6am we wandered around about 7 hotels until we found one for $12 accecptable for a big city +a/c but wasn’t available till 10, so we dumped our bags and went for a fry up :) I then made Polly walk around for about 4k (she was a lot more tired than me) so I could look a cinema times.. nothing on, but took in the nice sights of their attempt at Notre Dame cathedral – it was a weak effort to be fair with somes trees basically the same height! Anyways got to the hotel 9:30 and luckily room was ready early so we slept :) Went out in the afternoon round the market and used are rapidly improving bartering skills to buy some bits & bobs and then booked bus tickets and a day trip on the Mekong river the next day :)

The next day we were up bright and early to get on our mini-bus for the 2 hour :( drive out to the river, we floated round the river stopping at several islands to do things like eat lunch, eat bamboo candy, eat fruit party, listen to delightfull singing, hold big old snakes that licked my hand (Polly unfortunatley was on camera duty so couldn’t/wouldn’t hold the snake!)  and take canoes  down small rivers straght out of James Bond chase scenes :)

In the evening we went to a water puppet show – cause were cool – plus the leaflet said ‘Not going to Water Puppet Show, is not been going to Vietnam yet’ in that beautiful grammar so how could we resist?! It was fun and cleverly done and not too long so was entertaining :) Was another night of two teas for Toby and Polly got a  Pancake then we retreated back to the hotel room.

Next day was the day of going to Cambodia. Had a great guide who told us exactly what to do at the border crossing and it was very smooth and nice :) A very different experience to the last one! Anyway we drove through Phnom Penh and stopped for about 30mins to get food and change busses. That was our visit to the capital – we’ve decided to skip staying a few nights to spend more nights at cooler places, plus it looked like just a capital city with lots of government buildings and over priced everything! (The ministry of Womens Affairs was a large shop and its logo a handbag… I’m sure they do lots of important work there..)

Anyways now we’re down in Sihanouk Ville and it has been very nice :) We spent yesterday wandering up to the other beaches (turned out to be quite a long way in blistering heat) Before strolling down and stopping at a nice bar with sunbeds for drinks and dipping in the boiling sea several times :) then both of us riding on the back of one moped (me wearing just my board shorts and flip flops) back to our beach for a another good beach bbq and then a mini night out down the bars on the beach (25cent beers 5$ vodka buckets – and they were actual buckets hence the price tag!) with even a bit of dancing involved!

Up early again as we were going on a boat out to some islands to do a bit of snorkeling and sunbathing. Has been a very relaxing day, Pollys snorkelling skills have now majorly improved – we stopped at a couple of dive sights today to see some different types of coral and stopped on one island for about 4 hours to sunbathe, o and for another beach bbq :) Anyway we’re about to go down to the beach and have, yes, another beach bbq for tea before getting on our bus – which has a movie theatre showing on it apparently from 8:30 till 10! Will be fun!

Sorry for the lack of photo uploading, internet is not quick here (as usual) will update the gallery with lots when we have more time!

“I got my swim trunks… and my flippy floppies” …

03.10

Ok, so I promise this post wont be as long as the last one… at least im pretty sure. Last few days have been busy busy so today was saved for a bit of lard-arsing at the beach, even though it was the first time there has been no sunshine since we started travelling.

So in Hue, we did manage to make it out of the hotel pool at least for a little while admittedly not too too long. In fact, the day after our boat trip we had another 8am start— by choice (!) to go look at this citadel thing, which i think is where the emporers of vietnam used to live until they were abolished in the 1950′s. Quite glad we didn’t do an organised tour/ day trip as we walked there ourselves took about 45 minutes and then saw everything we wanted to see (which didn’t seem to be much) in about an hour. Maybe we just aren’t good enough at cultural stuff but to be fair… im sure it would have been good when there were kings (who looked about 8 in the photos and had seriously massive beds!) actually there, but now its quite run down and they are doing lots of construction. SO, we were back to the hotel for 10 giving us plenty of pool time before our 12 oclock check out :)

IN hue we found this awesome little street restuarant thing and we had two meals there both of which cost 84,000 (which is about 2 pounds 80– between us) and that was a full-on meal, plus DELICIOUS fruit shakes.. in fact i think they entered our top 3! toby had dragon fruit but tried to steal my orange and lemon when it first came. The next time, i tried a different one and he went for the orange and lemon and it was no where near as tasty! SHAKE ENVY TIMES :D

We got on our sleeper bus (see picks) very weird, bus with loads of tiny bunk beds :) but quite comfy overnight heading for Nha Trang… quite a nice, hassle free journey really, arriving right on time… at 6am :S lil inconvenient but all the hotel people seemed to be awake and wanting to persuade us to stay, and we had found somewhere within a few minutes… 3 hour nap and we were good to go.

The weather was WELL sunny, we had music, and books, and snacks, BEACH TIMES! you could rent sunbeds under little straw hut things for a dollar each (had to be done) and, erm, that was about it for that day really :P The water was actually warm which was VERY nicee.

That night we stumbled upon a bar with happy hour going on which seems to last basically 10am-11pm here, and you could get double vodkas for 50p and these amazzzzzzing alcoholic bucket things for a quid which were pineapple-y and therefore very yummy. It was our first kind of ‘night out’ for… since we got here actually (sorry we are pathetically un-hardcore :S) and maybe it wasn’t the best idea to book a 1o hour sleeper bus to saigon on the way back to the hotel :S hehe—- it’ll be fineeeee, we’ve checked the tickets and at least they are for today (the right day :) )

Wasn’t feeling too too brilliant when we awoke at 8am (!) to get picked up for our party cruise thing we had booked the day before, but felt a lot better by the time we boarded the boat… whoop whoop. It was called the 4 islands trip, although we didnt really see much of the island, i think it was a bit of an excuse for a swim, some music and a lil bit of drinking. No complaints from us :) although we stayed on the 7up. First stop was the ngu ngu (not really called that but everything here sounds vaguely like it ) aquarium– see pics, not very big but some very funky fish and a very tall tower thing to climb up with not a very good view. Back on the boat– next island— snorkelling and looking at the coral reel thing i think i even managed about 3 breathes under water~! yayyy not bad for a first timer.

I think it was lunch next, which was worringly similar to our past boat trip lunch yellow noodles and weirdy fried stuff with a bit of chicken. AND bananas :D :D which taste sooo much better here! then it was entertainment time. There was a crazy guitar guy, a drummer, bassist, and an old man wearing a coconut bra with a tambourine, and our crazy tour guide dude- the lead singer :S they appeared from basically nowhere and assured us we would see them soon on M.T.V… maybbbbeeee not, but they were VERY entertaining. WE almost got roped into karaoke, as he went round the boat asking for different nationalities so he could murder, in turn, a song from each country :) luckily Tobys ”we’re from canada” a country that had already gone got us off the hook, although i dont think they were very convinced :P

It had been quite cloudy in the morning but by the afternoon all the clouds cleared and by the time we were ready for the floating bar it was SUN allllll the way. The floating bar was basically tambourine guy sat on a platform thing while we all floated in our rubber rings towards him for free drinks :) which were yucky :( and too rum-y for my liking. And the playlist was immense. Basically like BPM only better. it was awesome.

WE then floated off to the last island, to relax and catch some rays on a private beach with ice-creams — its a very hard life– before getting on the boat for lots of free fruit then back to the harbour where we got dropped off at our respective hotels.. IN total the day cost about 6 quid… not bad at all !

Last night was my second pizza in a row which totally didnt live up to the first night which was yummy yummy. Toby had pasta (suprise suprise) but still has not found anywhere which lives up to toby standards (suprise suprise) or tobys portions (impossible). Im sure he will keep trying.

Today has been fairly (make that very) lazy. We started off on a walk to these tower things which are supposedly quite impressive, but gave up when we realised the guidebook map ran out pre-maturely and we ended up in a locals market. Good times. Good excuse for some brekkie (beans on toast -yayyyyy) and pool. I beat toby both games :D :D what can i say? i reckon thaty brings the running total to 4-1. BURN>.

And tonight we are off to SAIGON / HO CHI MINH city. another 6am arrival. WHOOP!

Toby would write… but shocker he is hungry :P so cba :)

I’ll have you know…egg is in fact a very mature game :)

It’s Polly here and i didn’t die…i just almost did for a while, but you know, we had some fun times trying to dodge our way out of a restaurant after having been sick all over the floor. TIP : do not use a new look bag with a hole in the bottom to contain your sick.

But I’m better now (yay) and we are finally in Vietnam, even though it felt like we had been stuck in Vientiene forever (probably because we had been.) It wasn’t the most exciting place to be honest— in fact there was little to do so we were pretty psyched to get moving again. However, me being ill meant we had to move the bus tickets a day later :( Thankfully i slept for about 20 of those hours… im sure toby had a great time reading in the room all afternoon and fetching us food in the evening. Upside— the nice room that he found us as we had already checked out the old (SKANKY) place had a T.V- meaning we could watch House followed by Total wipeout— YAY! ANd to be fair it was the first telly we had watched in ages (apart from superbad in the tv room at another hotel but shhhhh) so its allowed.

AT lasttttt…. after MANY games of uno supreme (thank god that version has been invented…we’ve made some more rules…. crazy times !…and 3 hours in a bakery– spending 2 pounds total (skill) it was time for the bus.

The 24-hour local border crossing bus. Not gunna lie- next time i’ll go V.I.P! I suppose it would have been a lot more traumatic if i had still been ill…and i guess it wasn’t that bad. To start off with… we pulled up to the bus station and in between two lovely sleeper vip double decker sleeper buses was our, local coach with the ominous words… back roads to Hue written on the front. Good times. After being pushed to the back with our bags by a man who took our tickets and appeared to be somehow related to the bus company we finally got going setting off at about half 6.

We were the only westerners on the bus which was a first, quite daunting but now we are proper proper travellers- so there! We settled in on the albeit padded seat and listened to some tunage and i was just starting to think about getting some sleep when we pulled over for ‘dinner’. Dinner, started by everyone peeing in the bushes as the ‘restaurant’ had neglected to make such facilities. Yes, even me had to pee in the bushes. EW. thankfully Toby shielded me from view. We didn’t end up getting any dinner, mostly because i was ill and didn’t feel like eating but also because you had to pay, and also because no one offered us any and we weren’t really sure how to get it. And to be fair, after looking at ‘it’ i think we could have made a right decision.

Back on the bus… where we took it in turns to pick the most awesomest songs from our selection- raving to Watcha say and lonely island under the starry Lao night sky. Rave dance moves were included if you are wondering. I think we may have actually got some sleep then, and we thought we had mastered the whole ‘local’ bus thing :) Fast forward 6-7 hours.

5a.m- Awoken (rudely) by women getting on the bus trying to sell us vietnamese dong for lao kip (thats money by the way) at the worst exchange rates EVER. we said no politely about 20 times, before we started having to say no a bit more force-fully. Toby came close to physical violence. Close being the operative word thankfully.  We were pulled over outside what seemed to be a restaurant thing, open at 5? breakfast?? seriously. We closed our eyes hoping staying on the bus would make it move quicker. NO luck. A random man came on demanding our passports. Good times— it was the first time we had been separated from them (a little bit of worrying) and yes, i had a little bit of an irrational mini-panic when i saw a fire being started in the ‘kitchen’.

After more peeing in bushes (yes ,me again unfortunately) we decided to sit in the restaurant thing. Mostly to keep an eye on what the guy was doing with our passports  which was a lot of faffing by the look of it. Then, after an interminable amount of time (20 minutes or so… but come on… 5 in the morning!) he called us over and said basically ‘oi…30,000kip each stamp fee. ‘ Perhaps im too sceptical but, a stamp fee? for passports?? very legit im sure. And, we’d already had to spend 50 dollars on our visa. He then put all the passports in a carrier bag after removing our two and putting them separately, and then put the carrier bag under a moped seat and locked it. Reassuring times :) Oh yes, i forgot to mention that im not certain, but pretty sure that he accidentally dropped some of the stamp fee money…phew… luckily it landed in his pocket.

After an hour or so… feeling quite bemused the sun came up, making everything seem ever so slightly less daunting and dodgy…HINT… seem…we drove for about 10 mins with the moped/passport guy ahead then stopped at what we guessed to be the border. After following everyone else off the bus after being told to… we were then shepherded back on being told that the border didn’t open until 7… 50 minutes later. Can i just point out that for the entirety of this journey we were told nothing… and had to rely on following people… good times.

At 7 we wondered over to the border, where it seemed to still be closed but luckily our passports hadn’t been set on fire and the ‘stamp fee’ seemed to do the trick…moped man gave us them back. We were successfully out of laos. Honestly… it wasn’t our favourite place… but then maybe we were looking in the wrong places.

Bring on Vietnam (well we almost didn’t)! We walked across the sections between the border while the bus drove separately with our bags worryingly on it and the first stop was where they checked our temperature. Polly= sees quarantine zone… major internal panic having had at least a moderate fever just one day before… then panics more when wondering if internal panic can in fact give you the fever i so want to avoid having. Did i mention we were shuffled (Toby would say pulled) into an alternate queue for ‘westerners’ apparently which involved having everything recorded in a book. Stage one: complete. New queue. well, we queued— no one else did. Yet another panic when we noticed that everyone else had money not so subtly tucked into their passports to hand to the border guard man. Another stamp fee i wonder??? We were not prepared to pay again so bravely went for it without money… deep breath… and… then we got sent away to fill out a special form.. whoop whoop, after finding a pen, we filled it out and then went back

*By this time everyone else from the bus was through home and dry (presumably) and no where in sight*

We got what must have been a nice border guard because he didn’t ask for any money and we received our vietnam stamps yay! In our haste to go refind the bus we almost ran through another passport check point… oops…. big smiles… sorry we are stupid english people.

Now- the bus….1 minute, no sign… walking further… no sign… lotsof buses parked, none ours. Random women points… that way… ok…. another women offers to take us to some place in a minivan… no… we have a bus… we think….2 more minutes of walking, still no sign…. and no buses ahead. I’d like to look back on this moment and say we were well chilled and it didn’t even matter because bags only weigh you down and we would have got there somehow. Nah- i was worried :) Toby is kidding himself saying he was in fact well chilled. (I actually was, Polly is trying to twist it so it looks like I wasn’t!)

Other side of road, a few mins later… a bus… is it ours??? Would they actually have driven off without us.. i say deffo yes….toby has more faith…it has red writing on the front??? good sign… its the last hope, but its facing the wrong way and is having a wheel changed… bad sign. YAYYYYY it was the bus. ALthough panic not over as bus was empty …quick check if bags are still there… yup. Mechanic man points down hill… driver sat in cafe having breakfast “excuse me, where do we go”… reply: grunt with point towards bus. So we walk back and decide we are not leaving until someone comes back… which they do eventually then drive back to the border market thing to pick up everyone else who was waiting there. AWwww easy times. nothing to worry about at all really :S

Back on bus with passports safe in bag confused as to how it can possibly take another 12 hours to get to our destination when according to the map it was only 150km or so. It only took three so we arrived at about 10:30am as opposed to 7 at night, dropped unceremoniously on the side of the road, our bags on motorbikes before we could even agree. The drivers showed us pics of a hotel, we said no, we have one already (picked one from guidebook and hoped for the best)… we agree $5 for both of us and off we go… on motorbikes (toby would call them scooters but it is good enough for polly)… eeek!

10 mins later we pull up… argument ensues over the fact that they were charging $5 each… NO way.. rip off… they basically chased us into the hotel so we had to agree on 8 with the help of the receptionist. It wasn’t until we had checked in and given our passports and were chilling in the admittedly very nice room… that we realised the knobhead drivers had actually taken us to the hotel they showed us a picture of… which was… comedy times…. next door to the one that we had asked them to take us to… ironic.

But I am happy with this hotel, it has a lovely pool (see pics) ensuite, and air-con, and TV :) Little bit out of our price range (well… 1 pound anight more than normal.. im prepared to pay… Toby seems a little more reticent. Trauma over pretty much, and maybe we have over dramatized ever so slightly… but tbh… not really!

Lazy day yesterday where we ate our first proper meals in three days and found a welllll cheap place with amazing fruit shakes, toby tried dragonfruit (brave) may go back there at some point. We hung by the pool for ages (our first proper pool so far) and Toby taught me the ways of egg where you curl into a ball and float until you run out of breath.. there are many variations but all of which involve Toby winning. We also had a little round of gladiators because we could, because we are well mature travellers. Sometimes i feel like a little kid whose been allowed to go round the world when they clearly arent old/mature enough.. help by the fact the man at the bus-booking place almost did that little shocked cough thing when i told him we were only 18.

We’ve booked our bus to Nha Trang (a beach) for tomorrow… another long ‘un… 16 hours but this time the bus is a sleeper one and there are no border crossings involved.

Today we were very cultured and went on a day trip (8am start!) on a dragon boat to explore hue a bit further. it lasted til 4, lunch included and only cost 3 quid! bargain :) we saw a nice pagoda thing and stood outside for a martial arts demonstration because we were too stingy to pay the entrance fee though you could see it from where we were standing anyway. Slightly disappointing lunch— plain rice, plain noodles bit of random fried stuff and i had to use chopsticks (i cannot use chopsticks). Went to a tomb of some king guy who apparently had about 150 children, 530 wives and made 5 babies in one night. WOah.

We didn’t want to pay to go to the two other tombs on the tour which ended up being an amazingly good choice because it meant we then got to leave early by motorcycle instead of being driven around by bus all afternoon (it was crazillly hot and everyone was melting and i could tell they were jealous as we sped off. Back to the hotel after dodging traffic along the way (they use horns as brakes here and lanes dont really bother them ) for a lovely swim, and now here we are. 2,164 words later. Mammoth! right, food time again i think.

Hello all :) it’s Toby now, sorry about Polly dragging on for so long :p hehe. Ummm not really much more to add (wonder why…) but we have very fast (&free internet here) so I have added lots more photos to the gallery (even some older ones that we didn’t upload before due to time!) Flick through and check them out :) Byeeee xxxx

Around the world in flip-flops…again!

2010
03.03

Sabadee! (That means hello in Lao) Polly has decided to travel in just her flip-flops again as shes lost a shoe, in the calamity that was our ‘VIP’ bus trip from Vang Vieng…

I’ll get to the bus journey in a second, but we didn’t write about our last afternoon in Vang Vieng, we went to the river in the afternoon and floated down the rapids and sat on the bank people watching andskimming rocks, then we went out for food and played pool on the huge table! Polly would like to point out that she won 2 -1, but she only won her 2 games because I accidentally potted the black!

So the bus.. We had it all booked for a 1:30 bus to get us in at around 4ish, but the bus company obviously don’t limit how many tickets they sell.. When we arrived on our minibus to the coach it was completely full so us and about 25 other travellers were left stranded :( The bus people didn’t see any need to tell us anything so the coach just left and we were all sat there in a deserted bus stop in mid day heat wondering if they were going to come and pick us up.. Some of the other travellers had other busses that they were catching from Vientiane and a couple even had flights to get :s At round about 3ish a minivan turned up and said it was taking us.. Without any aircon, squished seats and the bumpiest suspension ever – VIP indeed. Plus it could only take 10 of us! We got on it as we were one of the first people to arrive at the bus stop, but this Canadian girl who had only arrived 10 minutes earlier pushed her way on saying she was in a rush to get a flight.. people weren’t very happy with her..

After riding for about an hour the van pulled over at a coach and said we were switching to that! We got on and waited for the other vans to arrive then we set off and got into Vientiane at about 6ish.. The bus stopped for petrol about 4km away from Vientiane and everyone decided to get off for snacks even though we were 5 minutes away! The canadian girl ‘who was in a big rush’ was the last to get back on the bus… We then got a tuk tuk downtown and found somewhere to stay in the dark.. It was when we got inot our delightfull room that Polly realised that she only had 1 shoe left…

Anyways Vientiane hasn’t exactly been our cup of tea.. Everywhere is hugely overpriced, triple what we have been paying in Laos and Thailand – we have had curry for the last 3 nights as it is all we can afford! Our hotel was not very nice ‘I was being sarcastic earlier btw’ it was boiling, not that clean, windowless and the shared bathrom complete with cold shower was not pleasent.. I know we must sound like very posh travellers, but I think we have just been very lucky with hotels so far and have got used to it! Spent yesterday getting Visas in the morining for Vietnam ($50!!!), and then having a massage in the afternoon, which Polly found very relaxing and I found it like I was being poked everywhere and stretched in the wrong direction!

We went out for a couple of Lao beers last night which was very nice and we had a wander around the night market. Polly hasn’t been very well this morning (sick :( ) and still isn’t feeling good.. This is particularly bad as this afternoon we leave on a 24hr non-VIP bus to Hue in Vietnam.. Hoping she’ll perk up or just pass out on the bus ride!

Polly says hi, but is too drained to write anything :(

About the people that we have met so far.. We met a cool swedish guy in Chang Mai as well as this Irish girl who I couldn’t understand a word of what she was saying due to her accent but she was great and gave us loads of advice on places to go in S. America as she did it a couple of years back. We crossed into Laos and then rode up to Vang Vieng with this German guy who was quite nice, but not the chattiest and then we had breakfast with another German guy a couple of days ago.. Most of the locals that we talk to our mainly tuk tuk drivers/ run the hotels, but I’m sure we’ll get more locally as the travelling continues.

Think thats about it, sorry for not the most exciting post, the next one should be much more exciting as we enter Vietnam and hit the BEACHES :D :D :D Byeee for now xxxx

(The computer is very slow and won’t let us insert any pictures so will do that in the future) :)
